September 2026: Libra

Justitia moment.

Hey, mom, there’s something in the backroom.

In the United States, school used to start after Labor Day. I know that sounds like sound 20th century myth, but it was real.

So, September used to be about starting a new school year, but in this day and age school has been in session for most students for a month by the time September arrives. September still means that football (both college and professional) is back, for real with meaningful games that will dominate sports discourse for the next five months. The Super Bowl will be played on Valentine’s Day 2027. The oblong pigskin ball is alike a wart on the eyelid of football haters. They can’t see anything else. I love this time of year in sports because it is the beginning of one season and the end of another (baseball).

In my middle age, September became the month of our daughter, our eldest child. Her birthday is at the end of the month, but it’s a month-long build up to the day. That’s what it was like the year she was born. Once we turned the calendar into September, it was a countdown until her inevitable exit from my wife’s womb. That exit turned out to be a week early and filled with excitement. An emergency C-section later, we were parents to one of the coolest, kindest little humans in the world. I was a girl dad. Praise God!

13 years later, and boy did it fly by, we celebrated her birthday again with family and friends, friends like family, and family from afar. Never will I ever take these celebrations for granted. We are blessed to have these great people in our lives. One day, maybe even next year, it won’t look like it did the year before. Appreciate it. This is more of a reminder to me, but you might need to hear it, too.

What about Tim Curry, Peter Cullen, or…?

May they also rest in peace, but they were not Dolly Parton.

Hayden Panettiere also passed away this month. A tragedy for her parents, who have now lost both of their children at such young ages. May Hayden rest in peace.

Change the Game

Jaÿ-Z was proclaimed, “I will not lose,” in a song, and I wish I could make that same guarantee with my fantasy football team. However, it seems like no matter how I play the game, I find new ways to lose, or new players to help me lose in old ways. Winning is the name of the game in fantasy football, but it is hard to do. If you’re me in this particular league (Any Given Sunday), then you’ve never won a fantasy football title. AGS is a tough league to win for a variety of reasons.

Because the title has been so elusive, and because I don’t think I have the horses to run that distance this season, I have to shift my perspective in order to enjoy my time in the league. I have to look at this as a finite thing that will end one day, taking with it the group chat and the camaraderie we built over the years. It will end one day, and I may never win the title in AGS, but the point of it all was the camaraderie, not the titles. That doesn’t mean I don’t want to win it all, but it does mean I no loner lose sleep over a loss. I just shrug it off and move on.

Church

Judgment Day returned to cinemas for a brief 35th anniversary run the last weekend of August. I’ve seen this movie many times since its 1991 release. I saw it in theaters back then thanks to my cool older brother, and I hadn’t seen it in theaters since, so what better opportunity to seize than this anniversary re-release?

It was worth the twenty bucks. The movie looked and sounded great. The auditorium was around two thirds full, not bad showing for a 19th century sci-fi relic that is now eerily closer to becoming a reality than just being a work of fiction.
