Can’t read my, can’t read my, no he can’t read my poker face.

I have a confession to make. I liked going back to school every September. Summer breaks were fun, but I was ready to mix it up again in school with the friends I didn’t get to see over the summer. I loved it when the calendar turned to September back then, and I still do. This month is the gateway to more festive days all around the world. The half I live in gets a little cooler in September. The leaves change color. People drink pumpkin-spice lattes. September means Halloween and Thanksgiving are around the corner. September means football (hand egg) and flannels. It means I get to celebrate birthdays for family and friends. It’s a great month, and it’s already gone. Hope you enjoyed it. I did, and I’m sad to see it go.

Birthdays Was the Worst Days

If you were broke like Biggie was, probably. But, if you’re blessed like some of the September Virgos and Libras I know, then you had lovely birthday celebrations this month. My friend, Rob, celebrated his birthday by eating mushrooms with some coworkers and hanging out at the beach. Rad. My nephew, West, for his birthday got to see Clayton Kershaw pitch his last game ever. Sick. My friend, Jeni, had a kickback hosted in her honor, and a bunch of lifelong friends got to kick it and share some laughs. My daughter turned 12 last week, and I wonder where the time went.

Her mom and I have been present in her life since she was brought into the world a crying and a wriggling. We’ve taken her everywhere, and we’ve done a lot with her. I made time to play with her every time she asked me to throughout her childhood. She doesn’t ask me to play with her much anymore. Once in a while, she’ll ask me to play some video games with her. Maybe our Little Tykes Zoo play dates have become karaoke jam sessions. Maybe we don’t talk about our favorite dinosaurs as much as we talk about what the skibidi sigma kids are up to in middle school. Things done changed. Growing up has a way of doing that. I anticipate change, but I guess I wasn’t ready for how fast this one—our daughter a year away from being a teenager—changed.

I remember being at a park near our old home in Upland back in 2013. It was midday on a weekday in So Cal December. Blue skies and sunshine but with a chill in the air. I was on a walk, pushing a stroller with our 3-month old daughter, and I decided to cruise through the park and see what’s up. The swing set was vacant, so I took Malia out of the stroller and sat on a swing with her. We swung back and forth slowly. My feet never came up off the ground. It was a lovely moment during which I imagined Malia being a little older and being able to fully enjoy the playground experience. My daydream was interrupted by an older gentleman, probably not much older than I am right now, saying something to me from the sidewalk the wrapped around the playground.

“Enjoy this moment, my man,” he said to me. “It goes by fast.”

12 years later, happy birthday, kiddo!

Farewell to the GOAT

This section was pull from my recent FarFromProfessional.com article, “Goodbye, Kersh”.

It’s completely fair to refer to Clayton Kershaw as one of the greatest pitchers in Major League Baseball history. 3 CY Young Awards (one in 2014 along with the National League MVP). Look at his numbers for those CY Young seasons.

MLB.com

He’s also thrown a no-no. He’s won 2 World Series rings. He’s statistically the best in several pitching categories, and he’s going out with a better record and ERA than his first season way back in 2008. That’s with around the same number of starts, too.

MLB.com

It will be strange to see number 22 up on the Dodger Stadium suite level with the other retired numbers instead of out on the field, tossing a gem. But all great careers come to end. Kersh, thank you for making your entire career one in Dodger Blue.
