2025: febrero

See, you had my heart from the start like Cupid.
The month of love saw a major breakup between a sports franchise and its cornerstone superstar. Before we talk about heartache, let’s focus on love.
Aquarians
My month of love began with a birthday celebration for a lifelong friend, a dinner served with laughs that ended early because we’re old. The laughs and good vibes are why I show up to hangs with the homies. These people are precious to me, and when you have people like this in your life, you cherish the moments that you get to spend with them. That’s love.
Love endures, so shoutout to my mom. Her birthday is February 1st. She tests me weekly during our conversations, and she drives me nuts (she would probably say the same thing about me), but I love her.
The duality of February is that the emphasis on love brings with it the public acknowledgment of loneliness and the fact that most people don’t want to end up that way. Singles Awareness celebrations are really just opportunities for those people to find love just in time for Valentine’s Day, like they do in the movies. It doesn’t always work out like that. Heartache is part of life. I think that it makes you appreciate love more.
Philly
February included a shocking Super Bowl’s result. Few people thought that the Philadelphia Eagles would dominate the Chiefs. Most people figured it would be a close game that would go the Chiefs way in the final drive. As a Chiefs hater and die hard Raider, I was thrilled to watch the Kansas City get crushed, and it warms my heart to know Chiefs’ fans finally had theirs broken.
Luka
One person’s heartache can become another person’s perfect match. Dallas Mavericks’ fans had their souls sucked from their bodies Shang Tsung-style when their franchise start, Luka Dončić was traded to my good old Lakers. It was a miracle turn of events for this franchise that no one saw coming; one that the Lakers’ organization needed but would never get unless some other franchise decided to bail them out. Why would any team do that for another team? A conference rival? Why would any team trade away their best player? Their franchise cornerstone? One of the best players in the NBA? There are no satisfying answers to that question for Mavericks’ fans. Luka was their present and future. They traded Trae Young for him in the 2018 draft, swapping what was their fifth pick for the Atlanta Hawks third. That move in itself was highly questionable, but the Hawks are off the hook because the Phoenix Suns had the number one overall pick and passed on Luka for Deandre Ayton, who is now on the Portland Trailblazers.
I digress.
The Mavericks obviously wanted Luka, so they got him, and he only ended up being one of the top five (arguably) players in the NBA since then and appeared to be right on his way to becoming another European legend for the franchise. Luka is only one year removed from helping the Mavs get to (and then get smoked in) the NBA Finals, but they didn’t want him anymore. They needed a fresh start with someone else. Now, Mavericks’ management is tripping up all over themselves to set fire to Luka’s reputation and get the word out that they believe Luka is heading towards an imminent decline in skills soon, so they clandestinely traded him to the Lakers without opening him up to the market because they really wanted Anthony Davis, so why not just go and get him?
Thank you, Nico!
On the flip side of that heartache, there’s nothing but love for this serendipitous event in Lakerland. In situations like this, they say “only time will tell”, but the sentiment across the board is that the Mavericks made a colossal mistake.
I usually hate February, but it turned out to be an okay month (if I ignore the government on fire around me).
Dog Doo
This month’s PSA is for dog owner’s. Pick up your dog’s shit when they take a dump while on a walk.
